WHAT ARE PARABENS?
Parabens are a group of inexpensive synthetic preservatives widely used in the cosmetic industry. Parabens increase shelf life and reduce bacteria growth. Until recently, they have been considered safe, but new studies have linked parabens to increased estrogen levels, increased risk of breast cancer, and targeted them as a leading causes of contact dermititis. When paraben-laced products are applied to the skin, they are absorbed into the body, often mistaken for estrogen, disrupting the endocrine system, causing health problems and sometimes cancer. Instead of parabens, we use a naturally-derived preservative in our Ode Natural Beauty lotions and washes derived from sage essential oil, called phenoxyethanol. For our olive oil-based lip and body balms, we use Vitamin E. It's not only a great natural preservative, but also a natural, antioxidant-rich moisturizer.
WHAT ARE PHTHALATES?
Phthalates(thal-ates) are chemicals used in many cosmetic products as fixatives for fragrances to slow evaporation, causing scents to last longer. Either absorbed through the skin or inhaled, phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system and cause hormonal imbalances. In addition, they can be damaging to the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems. The US Environmental Protection Agency has identified phthalates as both water and air pollutants. The European Union has banned them for use in cosmetics since 2003. For detailed info on phthalates and other potentially harmful cosmetic ingredients, visit:www.safecosmetics.org.Certified Organic
